In honor of the publishing house, it was renamed Vogue. A typeface similar to Futura first appeared in 1929 in the pages of a magazine, Vanity Fair. The Futura typeface spawned countless imitations, but none of them caught on quite like the original. It is arguably the most ubiquitous typeface. First presented by the Bauer Type Foundry in 1928, Futura is commonly considered the major typeface development to come out of the Constructivist orientation of the Bauhaus movement in Germany. Over the century following its release, typefaces like Vogue, Metro, Spartan and others borrowed from its aesthetic to various degrees. As I write these pieces of type history on Medium, I’ve learned to visually identify many typefaces but the pleasure of encountering Futura in the myriad and diverse ways it is used, from posters, logos, instrument panels to council bin bags, is a pleasure like no other.
The legibility and simplicity of Futura bolstered its popularity but has also made it one of the most-copied fonts in history. For its part, Futura persisted well beyond the era of its creation and spread over the decades in part simply because it worked well, designed as it was to be a highly readable font. Although it started life with some very eccentric letters, particularly 'a' and 'g', the lower-case alphabet of Futura is now a. In his book about the font’s history, graphic designer, historian and writer Douglas Thomas recounts how left-wing activists and communists actively used Futura in stark contrast with Fraktur-style Blackletter designs.
